ELI-IMPULSE Fellowships 2021

The Extreme Light Infrastructure (ELI) is the world’s largest and most advanced high-power laser infrastructure and a global technology and innovation leader in high-power, high-intensity, and short-pulsed laser systems. ELI’s lasers produce ultra-short pulses of high-energy photons, electrons, protons, neutrons, muons, and neutrinos in the (sub-)attosecond regimes on demand.

IST, through IPFN, joined the project ELI-IMPULSE (https://impulse-project.eu/) with the goal of extending the community of ELI users to national researchers. To do so, we started a new program of Fellows ELI-IMPULSE, with the attribution of scholarships for graduate students who are conducting a master’s degree in an ELI-related topic.

For this purpose, in the academic year 2021-2022, we offer up to 5 scholarships grants, each with a duration of 3 months. The research can be carried out in every second cycle of the IST courses or other national MSc degree-granting institutions. For students outside IST, an agreement must be signed between IPFN/IST and the R&D host institution where the work is going to be developed, and a co-supervisor at IST must also be identified.

The ELI IMPULSE fellowship program includes a one-week workshop involving all participants and taking place at Instituto Superior Técnico.

The program starts on the second semester of the academic year 2021/2022.

The main research topics involving the Extreme Light Infrastructure will be considered, including extreme photonics, extreme plasma, high energy particle sources, and their applications instrumentation, and engineering, whether theoretical simulations or experiments, light sources of attosecond regimes and their applications and nuclear photonics. Thesis projects with a co-supervisor belonging to one of the ELI structures are preferred.

Candidates from other higher education institutions will be considered, under equivalent conditions, subject to the existence of a specific collaboration protocol to frame the work of Fellows ELI IMPULSE.

Applications are open from the 11th to the 30th of November:

The necessary documents for the application are:

  1. Candidate’s CV;
  2. Unofficial list of the 1st and 2nd cycle’s classifications;
  3. Bachelor’s certificate (with the relative final average grade);
  4. Certificate of enrollment in the second year of the master’s.
  5. Research plan (max 1 A4 page) explaining the research project, the connection with the ELI project, the research center, and the supervisor(s), including, if possible, the CIÊNCIA VITAE ID of the main supervisor;
  6. A signed declaration, from the supervisor, to support the application.

The Selection Committee of the ELI-IMPULSE Fellows will be composed by:

-Marta Fajardo (Chair)

-Gonçalo Figueira

-Jorge Vieira

The applications have to be sent directly to the Selection Committee’s chair via email to marta.fajardo@tecnico.ulisboa.pt.
