Estágios X-GoLP 2020

Send an email to Gonçalo Figueira (goncalo.figueira@ist.utl.pt) with a resumé, a letter with your research interests, and the name of three referees that we can contact to obtain further informations about you. If we can identify opportunities that fit your profile we shall contact you.

We are always looking for bright, young, and highly motivated students that wish to pursue a PhD degree, with a background in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science.

If you fit this profile, and you want to join or to visit for a long period our team to work on laser/plasma experiments sustained by previous simulation, send an email to Gonçalo Figueira (goncalo.figueira@ist.utl.pt) with a resumé, a letter with your research interests, and the name of three referees that we can contact to obtain further informations about you.

You should also apply to the IPFN Doctoral Program – Applause – , which funds 10 PhD student positions per year, stating specifically that you wish to work at GoLP on the X-GoLP team.

Look up the advertised thesis subjects in the Physics Department webpage or get in touch with a particular potential supervisor of the X-GoLP team (listed as PIs). Check the research webpage for more information about what we do. In these cases, we may be able to offer a fellowship (Initiation to Research) depending on your CV, abilities and commitment. Note that this involves spending a significant amount of your weekly schedule at GoLP working with the X-GoLP team.

Typical (but not limited to) candidate profile:
– You are in the 5th year, only a few or no courses left behind, and with an expected final average >= 16/20 marks
– You can spare at least 15-20 hours per week to the placement work program (more in the case of a fellowship)
– You have a big interest in laser/plasma physics or in experimental physics, and you have a compatible know-how
– You are considering pursuing a PhD degree or seeking a job related to experimental physics

GoLP opens periodic calls for undergraduate research placements (“estágios”), normally at the beginning of a semester. These are widely advertised, and they are your opportunity to enroll with us. Applications consist of: your CV, academic record, and a research interests statement, eventually followed by an interview. These placements last for a minimum of 6 months, and can be extended or evolve into an MSc Thesis depending on mutual interest and performance. Such placements are not provide fellowships (“bolsas”) in this stage.

Typical (but not limited to) candidate profile:
– You are in the 3rd or 4th year, only a few or no courses left behind, and with an average >= 16/20 marks
– You can spare at least 3-4 hours per week to the placement work program
– You have a big interest in laser/plasma physics or in experimental physics, and you have a compatible know-how
– You are motivated, willing to learn and to work in a team
– You are looking for an opportunity to start working in the “real world” of research

If you fit the profile we are looking for (see the other tabs), we are happy to welcome you in our team, depending on your CV and time/resources availability. Usually we cannot provide financial support except for truly outstanding students that intend to join our team in the future as PhD students. Contact one of the X-GoLP team PIs for more details.
